MANILA — Boxing fans may have to wait longer for the long-anticipated rematch between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr., as the blockbuster showdown is reportedly no longer expected to take place this year due to scheduling conflicts involving the undefeated American.
Veteran boxing journalist Dan Rafael reported that the proposed September rematch has been postponed and could instead take place in January 2027, if negotiations are successfully completed.
“Pacquiao fight is NOT happening in September,” Rafael posted on social media. “The lawyers said the date for (Mike) Tyson exhibition is Sept. 12 if they work things out with Floyd. Pacquiao would be moved to January if it happens.”
The latest development delays what was expected to be one of boxing’s biggest attractions, with Mayweather and Pacquiao announcing earlier this year their intention to renew their rivalry 11 years after the historic 2015 “Fight of the Century.” Netflix had previously confirmed it would broadcast the rematch from the Sphere in Las Vegas on Sept. 19.
The American boxing icon retired in 2017 with an unblemished 50-0 professional record but has remained active through exhibition matches. His decision to return to professional competition was confirmed shortly before the rematch announcement.
Pacquiao, meanwhile, resumed his professional career in 2025 after a four-year retirement. The Filipino boxing legend battled Mario Barrios to a draw in Las Vegas, reaffirming his desire to compete at the elite level once again.
If finalized, the postponed bout is expected to reignite one of boxing’s greatest rivalries and attract worldwide attention. Their first meeting on May 2, 2015 (May 3 in the Philippines) ended with Mayweather earning a unanimous decision victory.
The original encounter remains the highest-grossing fight in boxing history, reportedly generating more than $600 million in revenue, with Mayweather taking home an estimated $300 million from the event.
