LEGANDARY boxer Floyd Mayweather’s return to the ring against Mike Zambidis has been CANCELLED just two days before the fight was due to take place!
Mayweather, 49, has had a number of exhibition bouts, but this one in Athens has been called off.
Why has Floyd Mayweather vs Mike Zambidis been cancelled?
Mayweather was expected to fight the 18-time kickboxing world champion this Saturday, but the fight has been called off on just two days notice.
The bout was put into question last week the CSI Sports Events sued the legendary boxer.
The company alleged that Mayweather was in breach of contract after he allegedly was paid $4.65million (£3.53m) to exclusively promote fights against Mike Tyson and Manny Pacquiao this year.
After looking for an injunction to stop the fight, as well as recollect their money, the fight has been cancelled at the last moment.
ESPN have reported that attorney Melissa Glass wrote to the Southern District of New York district court, saying: “Because Plaintiffs’ Motion remains pending without a ruling, the Mayweather-Zambidis event will no longer proceed in Athens, Greece as planned on Saturday evening.
“Plaintiffs’ commencement of this action and filing of the Motion, as well as their legal threats domestically and in Greece, have effectively stopped any promotion or distribution plans for the event and halted ticket sales.”
She also stated that the fight could be rearranged for a later date, but nothing has been confirmed yet.
Not only does it cancel the main event featuring Mayweather, it also stops a mammoth 17-fight card featuring boxing, MMA, kickboxing, Muay Thai and freestyle wrestling.
